- Shifting Lever Problems
Shifting difficulty of the challenger 750 must have pissed off some of its users. I found plenty of complaints about the difficulty in shifting of Cub Cadet Challenger 750.
Some of them even adjusted the shifting lever but the problem did not go away. So, what could be the reasons behind this?
Well, you could always blame the poor design of the shifting. Many people already said that!
But you may have excessive grease in the primary clutch area. Yes, you need a very small amount of oil in there so that the roller weights in there can move.
But, if you refer to the manual, you will find it recommends greasing that area slightly with 90 wt oil. Excessive grease will make it difficult to make shifting.
If you live in a cold region, you should apply moly dry spray instead of that oil.
- Transmission Problems
This is how the problem arises… You try to put it in reverse and the transmission begins to grind. This is what you should do if you ever face this problem…
First of all, if the warranty period is still active, take it to the dealer or their service center. And let them fix the transmission problem.
But if the warranty expires and you want to give it a shot yourself. There is a huge chance that the fluid itself is causing the trouble.
So, try to flush the fluid out and put in new fluid. You may need to bleed the clutch lines as well if the is getting in there.
But if things get really wrong, you may have to buy a new transmission!
- Engine Turns Off
Without any alarm or making any noise, there are some incidents where the Challenger 750 turned off automatically after running for a while.
Once it cut out on you, the engine may now start even if the starter cranks away after you turn on the ignition key.
Even if you change the oil timely and always use good synthetic oil, this may happen due to so many reasons.
There could be several reasons why the engine won’t start. And it would be a good time to refer to the operator’s manual.
Make sure to follow all the troubleshooting tips mentioned there like replacing old fuel, fixing fouled spark plug or cleaning the dirty air filter, etc.
If nothing works and the timing chain comes off due to worn-out camshaft and sprockets, you are in real trouble.
It may cost you between $1k to $2k to rebuild the engine like replacing or repairing the camshaft, timing chain, piston rings, valves, etc.
Apart from the above issue, many have complained about the power of the engine as well.
Yes, there is an emission restriction factor, but for a 735cc mill, the power of the engines seems a little laid back. A performance upgrade is expected to overcome this issue.
- Steering Trouble
For any two-wheel drive, you expect the steering to be light. And it is for the Cub Cadet 750 up until the drive lock sets in motion. The steering becomes too heavy!

Cub cadet challenger 750 is terrible in cold weather. Does not want to start. Changed battery to a 350cc and still would not start. Works fine when above zero or in a insulated semi heated garage. Do not recommend buying.

I own a 2018 Challenger MX 750 EPS and seriously never had any of the issues stated in the problems list. I live in Canada and my Challenger starts in cold weather no problems. I use it a lot for plowing my driveway and starts and goes every time. I would not attempt to start it when it is – 30 but ok -20. It is kept in my unheated garage. What else can I say other than keep the maintenance up on it with synthetic oil and you got a great machine.
